about

looking back, none of it was worth it

lyrics

When you risk it all for a girl
And by that I mean you tried
Texting her incessantly
And listening to her cry

The last thin you’d expect
Is that just five years later
That same crushing female
Is an alt right influencer

So you grapple with the fact
That this love unrequited
That you daydreamed hopeless fantasies
Of two bodies united

Changed her instagram biography
To reductive blanket statements
About bipartisan politics
The duality of nations

And it reads
If you’re not liberal when you’re young
You have no heart

If you’re not conservative when you’re old
You have no brain

What I’m gathering so far
Is that you proudly proclaim
In sans serif helvetica
Below your given name

Is not only did you lose your heart
Somewhere along the way
But you’ve forgotten how to operate
Your precious brain

On a golden autumn afternoon
Seeking cider refreshment
She opened up to me
About her gaping discontentment

With the leadership provided
by our democratic leader
Spewing all her father’s falsehoods
About liars and cheaters

Stealing his big Pharma money
To shit on the constitution
With horrific healthcare policies
And homosexual unions

Holding back as my partner
Tells me with steadfast assurance
That one more blue election and
She’s moving straight to Europe

And i thought

I know that we’re both pretty young
But aren’t you aware
That the idealogical spectrum
Skews bluer over there?

What I’m gathering so far
Is that you’d proudly declare
Underneath this browning foliage
While scrunchie-ing your hair
That not only don’t you understand
World political affairs
But you’ve made me so uncomfortable
With your escapist narrative

But who am I to judge
I grew up in a small blue collar town
Without great information
On the entire world around me

So I didn’t know what liberal meant
Until I got to college
And opened up previously
Unattainable knowledge

And finally all the insults
That were thrown at me by friends
Whose fathers whispered racism
While hunting on the weekends

Made sense with greater context
I was often gawked and laughed at
Sitting around kitchen tables
Pointed fingers at a democrat

Who didn’t understand the term
So scared to be made fun of
That I hid my truest self behind
Camo hats and paintball guns

Yeah, sure I’m being funny
But I’m really tryna get it
Why some boys that I grew up with
Took the red pill on reddit

It’s a long way of saying
I’m settling the score
With the boys who made me hide myself
And the alt right girls I loved before
